I often think about the idea of membership and what it means to be part of a community - be it local, global, cultural, familial, out of necessity or by choice.
Having worked for 2 decades in the nonprofit sector (6 years living & working in Malawi, Africa and then 15 years with the homeless population here in Portland, OR), I’ve also thought often about what one might call dis-membering - or the ways people are either separated, excluded from, or otherwise demoted within our communities - and the impacts this has on us and our communities as a whole.
In turn, this highlights for me the importance of re-membering or commemoration - and the role that memories, traditions, story-telling, or image-making can/should play in connecting us to each other.
All this to say, I f*cking love Photography! And I love people!
Street photography is my primary means of exploring and documenting communities and the ways we interact with each other and our shared environment. With a keen eye, I set out to capture the meaningful, authentic, or poignant moments within the frenzy of city and public life. It is with these unique skills and the sensibility of a Street Photographer that I approach all my other work.
